I was introduced to alcoholic hot chocolate at Café Intermezzo in Atlanta. If you live in Atlanta (or if you are a visiting out-of-towner) and have never before experienced the wonders of Café Intermezzo, you should definitely check it out. It’s styled like an Old World European cafe, complete with romantic lighting and foreign language learning tapes playing in the bathrooms Anyway, go to Café Intermezzo and get a slice of cheesecake and alcoholic hot chocolate. And bring a friend to split everything with since the portions are huge and ultra rich.
After one of our visits to Café Intermezzo, Drew really wanted us to try and replicate one of our favorite treats on our own. After we made this for the first time, we ended up making it pretty often because it was so simple and delicious. I had to temporarily put an end to the hot chocolate drinking since our wedding was approaching in a few months and I realized I might be unable to fit in my dress if I kept that up!
As you may notice in the above photo, I used a JIF Chocolate Hazelnut Spread instead of the real deal . . . it was on sale and I know that some of my family members prefer it to Nutella so I thought I’d give it a go. I didn’t notice a difference, even though I had always previously used true Nutella, so you can use whatever you have on hand. This recipe makes enough for one mug of hot chocolate, but you could easily scale it up to make a big pot to serve all your friends.
And you can make this kid-friendly by omitting the amaretto – all you need to do is whisk the Nutella into the warm milk. Super simple recipe for the win!
- ¾ cup milk
- 2 tbsp nutella
- 2 tbsp amaretto
- Pour the milk in a small saucepan and cook over medium-low heat until the milk is very warm.
- Whisk in the nutella until the mixture is smooth.
- Stir in the amaretto.
3/4 cup milk,
2 tbsp nutella,
2 tbsp amaretto.Instructions:
Pour the milk in a small saucepan and cook over medium-low heat until the milk is very warm. Stir in the amaretto. Enjoy!
